Privacy Policy

Higher or Lower Games is the name used to operate higherorlower.org. This policy explains what happens to information when you play, submit a score or contact us. For privacy questions, email [email protected].

1. Preferences on your device

Your personal bests, language and sound preferences are saved in your browser’s local storage. No account is needed. Clearing the site’s data in your browser removes those preferences and local records; it does not delete information already submitted to the server.

2. Optional global leaderboard

If you submit a score, we receive and store your chosen display name, category, score, submission time and a salted hash of your IP address. Display names, scores and submission times can be shown publicly. Use a nickname, not your real name, email or other personal information. Game sessions also make security requests to validate score submissions and limit abuse. The IP hash is pseudonymous data, not a guarantee of anonymity; the application database does not store the raw IP address.

3. Contact messages

The contact form sends your name, email address, subject and message to the server, together with a timestamp and an IP hash for abuse prevention. We store messages to read and answer enquiries and handle corrections. If email forwarding is configured, the message is also processed by Resend and delivered to the operator’s inbox. Email sent directly to us is handled by our email provider. Please avoid sending sensitive information.

4. Hosting and external services

Cloudflare hosts this website and processes normal request details, including your IP address, browser information and requested URLs, for delivery and security. Server records use Cloudflare D1; short-lived rate-limit and session records can use Cloudflare KV. Google Fonts delivers the typefaces and receives the connection details needed to send them. Card illustrations are supplied by this website; the game does not request images from Wikipedia or Steam. External reference links contact their destinations only when you follow them.

5. Storage and removal

There is currently no automatic deletion schedule for saved leaderboard entries or contact messages. Those records remain until manually removed. Temporary security records expire separately. To request access, correction or deletion of a submission, contact us with enough information to locate it. We may need to verify that the request relates to you. Browser data can be removed independently through browser settings.

6. Advertising and analytics

This release does not request Google AdSense advertisements, and the AdSense account verification tag does not request an advertisement. We do use Google Analytics 4 (measurement ID G-1G185PH4JH) to understand aggregate usage — such as page views, device type and approximate region — so that we can improve the game. Google Analytics sets first-party cookies in your browser, normally named _ga and _ga_<id>, which persist for up to two years and are used to tell returning visits apart. It processes that data on our behalf, and we do not send it information that identifies you personally, such as your name or email address. Analytics is currently loaded on every visit rather than being gated behind a consent prompt. You can prevent it entirely by blocking cookies for this site in your browser, or by installing the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on, which works on every website. Google's own handling of this data is described in the Google Privacy Policy. If advertising is introduced, this policy will be updated and the required privacy choices will be provided before activation.

7. Children

The game is for a general audience. Children should not enter personal information in public display names or contact messages. If a child has submitted personal information, a parent or guardian can contact us to request removal.

8. Your choices and rights

Playing does not require a leaderboard submission or contact message. You can clear local site data and contact us about server records. Depending on applicable law, you may have rights to access, correct, delete or restrict use of personal data and to complain to a data-protection authority. We do not sell your contact details or leaderboard submissions for advertising. See Contact to make a request.

9. Updates

We will revise this policy and its update date when our handling of information changes. Where consent is legally required — in particular before any advertising cookies are set — it will be requested through an on-site prompt, and simply continuing to use the site will not be treated as consent.
